Chapter 1:
High School Reunion
Long
ago, humans and monsters lived together, locked in an endless war to maintain
control of the planet. The most powerful of these ancient creatures were the
Black Devils. During the centuries-long struggle for dominance, the Black
Devils wiped out entire villages with their sheer power. But, the Black Devils
couldn’t think rationally, and were little more than mindless monsters bent on
destruction. But one day, on the eve of victory against the humans, all the
monsters vanished without a trace. But while the humans celebrated their
victory, the legacy of the Black Devils remained present for millennia.
Many
ancient myths from the years after the disappearance of all the monsters spoke
of the Black Devils. Some described them as demons sent to punish humans for
their sins. Others claimed them to be manifestations of pure destruction,
referring to the Black Devils as ‘Dark Harbingers’. But no matter what
differences there were, one thing was consistent with every myth and legend
about the Black Devil race. They were monstrous beings with skin as black as a
starless night, with glowing eyes of pure white whose very gaze felt as though
it could burn its way into your very soul.
But
what humans do not know is where the Black Devils went, or any of the monster
races for that matter. Unbeknownst to them, the Black Devils, over the course
of the conflict, had evolved mentally, and saw that the war would likely end in
extinction of both sides if it continued. So using their immense monster
energy, or youki, the Black Devils created a world just for monsters, and led
the other monsters through barriers scattered around the globe. When it was all
done, two worlds now existed where there was once one. One for humans, and
another for the monsters who sought to destroy them.
Over
time, the Black Devils, now governing this new world which they had dubbed
Youkai, began to see that peaceful coexistence between humans and monsters was
the only way to finally put an end to the ancient hatred between the two
worlds. So, after much time and careful planning, they erected a school known
as Youkai
Private Academy . Youkai Academy ’s primary goal was to help young monsters learn to
integrate themselves in human society peacefully so that another war could be
avoided. And for a hundred years, Youkai Academy has done its job, helping to create a peace between
humans and monsters.
And
now, a young Black Devil is about to arrive at the Academy for his first year
as a student. But before he will even reach the campus, he will come face to
face with his fate…
“So
that’s the school my great-grandfather built, huh? Youkai Private Academy …” said a young man, thinking out loud. He stood about
6’4, and had an athletic, but skinny build. His hair shone silver in the
morning sun, and his eyes were a deep shade of blue, visible behind his glasses.
His uniform was black with white trim, and bore the crest of his family on the
breast of his jacket, which was open, and exposed a white shirt underneath, and
a black necktie. This 15 year old boy was Ryu Tokugawa, Prince of the Black
Devils, and next in line to rule Youkai when his time at the Academy was
complete.
Taking
a deep breath, Ryu began to walk down the path leading from the tunnel to the
gates of the Academy. Completely unfazed by the dead trees, and the tombstones
lining the path, he walked onward, not really aware of what was going on around
him. However, reality hit him hard in the form a bicycle, which had struck him
squarely in the back. Ryu was thrown through the air, along with the rider of
the bike, and they both landed roughly on the path, rolling a few times.
A
few moments later, Ryu lifted himself off the ground, and upon opening his
eyes, found he had landed on top of the girl who had been riding the bike. Ryu
couldn’t believe how pretty she was. The girl’s eyelashes suddenly fluttered,
and her eyes slowly opened.
“Please
forgive me. The sun got in my eyes, and I couldn’t see where I was going,” she
said, her voice soft and sweet, like honey to Ryu’s ears. He didn’t respond
right away, lost in the depths of the girl’s beautiful eyes. They were a
beautiful shade of deep blue, and seemed to shimmer in the morning sun. She was
very fair of skin, and her hair was shoulder-length and lavender. She was
wearing a loose sweatshirt with navy blue sleeves, which left her shoulders
bare, and the shoulder straps of a black tank-top visible. She also wore a
plaid miniskirt, and thigh-high stockings with purple and pink stripes. There
was also a belt strapped around her thigh which disappeared under her
sweatshirt. Ryu’s gaze took it all in, burning every detail into his memory.
After a few moments, though, the girl spoke again.
“Um…
Would you mind moving, please?” she said softly, a pink blush across her
cheeks. Ryu quickly snapped back to his senses, and got off her. After dusting
himself off, he smiled, and reached out his hand to her. Still blushing, the
girl took his hand, and Ryu helped her to her feet.
“Are
you alright? Nothing broken I hope,” he said, genuinely concerned, and quickly
checking her head to toe. She didn’t seem to be bleeding or bruised. Just a
little dirty. The girl gave a shy nod, and dusted herself off.
“I’m
alright. But what about you? I hit you pretty hard just now,” she said timidly.
Ryu shook his head, and pushed his glasses onto his nose as they had slipped
forward during the tumble.
“My
back’s a little sore, but nothing serious,” he said calmly. The girl smiled,
the rosy blush still on her face.
“I’m
glad. It’s my first day at the Academy, and I thought I was going to be in
trouble right out of the gate,” she said, kneeling down to pick up her books
which had spilled out of her bag. Ryu began to do the same, but paused when he
found one of the girl’s books mixed in with his own. He picked it up, and
examined the cover. It looks like a journal. Wait… There’s a name on it.
Mi-zo-re. Her name must be Mizore. Hmm. Her name’s as beautiful as she is,
he thought as he turned around to hand the girl the book.
“I
think this one’s yours,” he said, holding out the book. The girl nodded and
took it, slipping it into her bag. “My name’s Ryu, by the way. Ryu Tokugawa,”
he said, standing up. The girl stood up, and picked up her bike.
“As
in the prince of the Tokugawa family?” she asked, turning to face him. Ryu
nodded, and adjusted his glasses.
“Yeah.
Since I’m next in line for rule of Youkai, I applied to the Academy so I could
learn more about the human world,” he answered, slinging his bag over his
shoulder. The girl looked at him, a soft smile on her lips.
“It’s
an honor to meet you, Your Highness,” she said, bowing her head in respect. Ryu
just laughed a little and looked at her.
“Oh
please. None of that. Just call me Ryu, ok?” he said with a smile.
“Alright.
My name is Mizore Shirayuki. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ryu,” she said
cheerfully, her smile never even fading. Shirayuki… I’ve heard that name
before. But where? Ryu thought as he looked at Mizore’s smile. Shrugging it
off as a coincidence, he walked next to Mizore as they both headed for the
Academy. As they walked to the campus, they didn’t say much to one another.
That is, until Ryu broke the silence.
“Mizore,
you wouldn’t happen to be a snow woman would you?” he asked, looking at her out
of the corner of his eye. Mizore nodded, and looked up at him. The height
difference was plainly obvious. Ryu was probably a foot taller than her. As she
looked at him, she took in every detail about his appearance.
“How’d
you know?” she asked, not taking her eyes off his face. Ryu ran his fingers through
his shoulder-length hair, and then pushed his glasses onto his nose again.
“The
chill emanating from your body is a dead giveaway. When I was younger, I spent
some time in a village of snow women when I was accompanying my father on a
diplomatic trip,” he answered. But when the memory of the village came back to
him, he let out a sigh. “I met a girl in that village who I absolutely adored.
She was very sweet and kind to me, and we played together every day until I had
to leave. Before we said good-bye, we made a promise to find each other again
one day. And to this day, I have never forgotten that promise,” he said,
looking up at the sky. He didn’t notice the rosy blush once again return to
Mizore’s cheeks.
That
story sounds so familiar. Something very similar happened in my own childhood.
But this guy can’t be that little boy. It must be a coincidence, she thought to herself. But even as she thought
this, she gripped the golden locket around her neck. It was the same locket the
boy had given her many years before. She still had his picture inside it.
They
didn’t say much more to each other the rest of the way, their focus stuck in
the past, stuck on their strangely similar memory. Then, acting on a whim more
than anything, Mizore opened the locket, and looked at the little boy’s picture
inside. When she saw it, she stopped dead in her tracks. There… There’s no
mistaking those eyes… But I need to make sure, she thought, closing the
locket. She got alongside Ryu, and gently took his hand. Caught off guard by
the sudden action, Ryu stopped walking and looked down at Mizore.
“M-Mizore?
What is it?” he stammered, trying to maintain his composure. But as he looked
into her eyes, his memory flashed to the girl from the village. Mizore blushed
a rosy pink as she looked up into Ryu’s eyes. Time seemed to stop for them as
they stood there. After what felt like an eternity, Mizore finally spoke.
“Please
tell me you haven’t forgotten your little snow bunny after 8 long years… My golden devil,” she said wrapping her arms
gently around Ryu’s neck, letting her bike fall to the ground. Upon hearing the
nickname he was given by the girl from the village all those years ago, Ryu
dropped his bag, and wrapped his arms around Mizore in a tender hug.
“After
all this time, I thought I never see you again, Mizore. I’m sorry I didn’t
recognize you sooner. You’ve just grown so much since then,” he said softly,
his breath sending a pleasant shiver across Mizore’s ear.
“8
years is a long time, Ryu. We’re not children anymore, and you’ve grown into a
handsome young man since I last saw you,” she said softly, blushing even more.
Ryu gently put his hand under her chin, and leaned in close, his lips barely an
inch from hers.
“And
you’ve become a beautiful young woman, Mizore,” he whispered against her lips.
As Mizore closed her eyes, she leaned forward, and their lips met, sharing a
blissful kiss more precious than anyone could ever hope to have. Her legs
trembling, Mizore held onto Ryu as tight as she could, and slowly slipped her
tongue past his lips. To her delight, Ryu’s tongue found hers and they began to
dance and play, sharing their first kiss after 8 years apart. They stood there,
locked in their passionate kiss, for what seemed like hours. It was a joyous
reunion, but after a few minutes passed, Ryu became aware of the time, and
reluctantly broke the kiss. As he pulled back from Mizore, a strand of saliva
still connected their lips.
“My
golden devil…” Mizore said breathlessly, her once pink blush now a bright rosy
red. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest, and she felt weak at the
knees. Ryu put his hand upon her cheek, staring lovingly into her eyes.
“My
little snow bunny…” he murmured. Suddenly, a noise shattered the moment. It was
the bell of Youkai Academy .
“Holy
crap. We’re gonna miss the entrance ceremony, Ryu!” Mizore exclaimed, picking
up her bike and bag. But to her surprise, Ryu lifted her onto his back, and
then looked over his shoulder.
“Hold
on tight, Mizore. I don’t want you to fall, ok?” he said, his arms around her
thighs, and leaning forward to keep Mizore balanced. She quickly nodded, and
wrapped her arms gently around his neck. “We’ll have to come back for your bike
after the ceremony, though. I can’t carry you and it at the same time,” he
said, facing forward again. Without wasting any time, Ryu began to run, desperate
to reach the Academy before the entrance ceremony began…
So that's Chapter 1. This Story means a lot to me, so please... If you don't have something positive or constructive to say about it, don't say anything, ok?
